Our Lady of Consolation will host a conversation between the African and the African American communities to talk about cultural commonalities, traditional differences, and the acknowledgement of historical pain on April 13, 2024, from 9 AM - 3 PM at their Family Life Center, 1235 Badger Court. Please plan to be part of this history making event that is intended to move this parish even closer to living as a beloved community of authentic brothers and sisters in Christ - exemplifying the African philosophy of Ubuntu: "I am because you are"
Our Lady of Consolation is Charlotte's only historically African American Catholic Parish. This Christian community that celebrates the rich heritage of both Roman Catholicism and African American traditions, traces back to 1941.
According to WFAE's local news reporting, one in six residents of Charlotte were born outside of the United States. Similarly, over the past decade, the greatest number of new parishioners at Our Lady of Consolation are first- or second-generation immigrants of Continental Africa or the Caribbean. Members comecountries including but not limited to Nigeria, Cameroon, Jamaica, Panama, Liberia, Ghana, Senegal, Trinidad, Congo, and every region of the United States.
This important conversation,curated by the Black Culture Commission, is sponsored in part "The House of Africa" and Catholic Order of Foresters.
The day will include an African Drum Circle, cultural stories, a distinguished panel of African and African American historians and real talk! A Continental Breakfast & Lunch will be provided.
